The Forteloud Family's
Artists of 2016
Jamie // JONES
Cherie Jones (stage name JONES) hit the British music scene in 2015 when her EP Indulge was released. But it was when her debut New Skin came out in late 2016 that I was captured. Only a week of it being out, the album reached my personal 'most played' on iTunes. Yes thats right, beating albums I've listened to since a kid, in just a week New Skin overtook them all! Such an amazing feat in my eyes.
I feel JONES' music is quite a different choice for me; her music coming under more the R&B and Soul umbrella with a chart vibe, something which unfortunately doesn't normally reach my iTunes library. But I was really taken aback by her musical talent and variation contained in each of her tracks. Take Hoops for example...
This was the first song I heard and is definitely my favourite. The intro starts with a Daughter'esk chill vibe then JONES' echoed staccato Alisha Keys vocals are introduced alongside some sort of synth scale (my musical terminology is so poor I tend to make up my own terms if you hadn't guessed this already..) But the point being is that almost 3 different genres came together within the space of about 30 seconds. Unusual to say the least. I just love the transitions between a dancey synth chorus before some down time where Jones's beautiful vocals really come to the forefront.
Other favouties on the LP include Melt (listen out for the groovy bass undertone), Out of this World (because who does want to be like everyone else?) and Walk My Way (insanely catchy chorus, you'll find yourself singing it all day). Meanwhile, Waterloo tugs on my heartstrings, and Wild gives me the courage to face a tough day. Honestly, there is not one track which is below average. All are impeccably written and every one bringing an individual strength to what is a stunner of an album.
If you thought New Skin was it though, you'd be wrong. In the last week JONES has also released an acoustic EP with a special acoustic version of her next single, Whole. Make sure you have a listen to that here! All thats left to say really is that if you haven't listened to the beautiful JONES just yet, I CANNOT encourage you enough to do so... JONES is definitely another artist I'd like to personally thank for making my 2016 (and my life in general) just that little bit easier.

Charlotte // Angel Olsen
After her release of Burn Your Fire For No Witness I have been keeping an eye our for Angel Olsen's new releases, and this year we were in luck. Olsen released her album MY WOMAN, which is a stunning album that shows a different side of her work. This album has been one of my favourite albums of the year and is one that I can and will constantly return to.

Daisy // Beyoncé
I completely agree with Adele's speech at the Grammys. Beyoncé has allowed music lovers to see a new side into her life. She took on the role Lemonade required without losing who she is. She instead held her original values and took us deeper into her mind. Something only great artists can achieve.
I must also give a shout out to Lady Gaga who demonstrated this with her album Joanne but I feel Beyoncé dove deeper into the meaning of Lemonade with an eye to its global impact, hitting the current political climate and the real issues those treated unequally face on a daily basis with honesty and integrity.
