Bear's Den: Pompeii

Pompeii;

I first heard Bear's Den when they accompanied Mumford and Sons on their Gentlemen of the Road tour in July. They were the first act up and therefore their job was to get the crowd excited and hyped up for the acts to come including Haim, Ben Howard and Vampire Weekend. And they did an absolutely fantastic job! Their folkie beat combined with perfect vocals really appealed to me. Pompeii was the last song in their set and I think a soft, charming song really relaxed the audience whilst still allowing us to clap and cheer along. The lyrics in Pompeii are beautiful and anyone who has ever lost a woman in their life can easily relate to them. The song has a sense of vulnerability and ignorance being from a child's point of you. 'I was too young to understand, the flowers slipping from your hand.' This stood out to me personally as I lost my Gran at a very young age and therefore the song reminded me how blissfully unaware I was of the situation. I love how positive the song becomes towards the end. At 2.37 the beat steadily increases as the chorus repeats almost as though the singer is steadily rising their 'head high' and following the lyrics advice 'she would want you to.' Their EP Agape is out now and anyone searching for inspiring lyrics with a Mumford folkie feel should check them out. Daytrotter perfectly summed up the band with this quote... "Bear’s Den reminds us that love isn’t so much hard as it’s complicated. It’s intricate and it’s agonizing. It forms and then dissipates. It always thrives before it crumbles. It leads people to dark places and the highest of peaks."
