I first heard Wolf
Alice at the beginning of this year when we posted about them in our Artists
To Watch In 2015. I have
to admit, I wasn't completely won over when I first heard them. I was
introduced to them through their song and video for Moaning Lisa Smile
- I'd also heard sections of
a couple of their other songs, Heavenly
Creatures and We're
Not The Same, and started to realise that they push around the edges of
their genre.
Blush is different to Moaning Lisa Smile - it's
less heavy, and feels (from just listening to the track separate from any
videos) as though it's more about the lyrics and the meaning behind it. It's
slow, introduced with the guitar melody that is consistent throughout the first few verses, before the lead, Ellie
Rowsell, sings "figured out I'm good / Turn me down like I knew I
should / Punch drunk, dumb struck, pot luck, happy happy" leading into the height of the
song accompanied by breathy backing vocals of "punch
drunk, dumb struck, pot luck, happy happy". The piece slowly dies out the same
way it began, back to the engaging guitar melody that introduced the piece with the
background fuzz that joined the soundscape, while Rowsell sings "curse
the things that made me sad for so long / yeah it hurts to think that they can
still go on / I'm happy now".
For some reason, this song interested me
more than the other tracks I had previously heard. Wolf Alice have since
released their album My Love
Is Cool in June, which is said to be a solid album and shows how they
have kept their within their genre of musicality and their ideals of what to write about - which is different to the expected british band. Their album is
something that everyone should definitely go and have a listen to - if you
haven't already - and so is their track Blush,
both of which you can listen to below.
