Introducing Hinds;
The first time this girl band were introduced to me I was honestly, very underwhelmed. When they cropped up as a recommendation on YouTube I was expecting a similar version to Haim or Pale Waves (whom I have recently written about here). But instead I was greeted with some off-sounding garage vocals which weren't particularly to my taste, so I simply disregarded the video leaving behind only one meagre view to prove I was there at all.
But since then these girls have cropped up almost everywhere. Added to numerous of this summer's festival line ups (this Spanish indie band will even be at Reading fest this year!) I thought I would give them another listen; everyone deserves a second chance right? And to my surprise I found myself humming along to their laid back summer-esk vibes almost immediately. I love how every record just sounds like the girls jamming in their garage (hence the garage genre name, how this only just dawned on me I don't know). You can really tell through the lyrics that they're just having a damn good time being young, with no worries at all. This is also clearly displayed in their videos, casually dancing on tables and in general just mucking about. I like this though; with the stresses and seriousness of life around us nowadays, it's refreshing for a new girl band to disregard all this and just focus on enjoying their youth.
My favourite song of theirs is Garden. Everything about it comes across as just so drowsy and chilled. The laid back guitar riffs have messy exchanges between them which makes it come across as even more mellow. Also, the droning vocals on top (all the girls having completely different tones which interlink perfectly) do not send out a particular message. Again to me this just makes it sound like the girls are disregarding life's serious issues and just having fun. Such a refreshing message in itself! Another favourite of mine is the song San Diego. I am in love with the Kooks-like riff at 0.33, during these sections you can really tell why they are compared to the Strokes and the Vaccines. I also really like the sections where all the vocals are laid on top of each other in a beautiful jumbled mess before they elongate and almost gradually die out. I find filler sounds like their 'dun dun dun duh duh duhhh' section normally really frustrating, artists tend to put them in just for the sake of it, but I must say this particular section in San Diego is seriously catchy!
All in all, Hinds are a very unusual pick for me. I would never have imagined myself liking garage, let alone a Spanish garage girl band. They have broken every single unwritten rule I would normally abide by in music but somehow.. I love it. They're youthful, fun, and mellow; just what is needed in the run up to Summer. I am positive they will be keeping me company on summer dusky walks home, or chilled days sunbathing in the garden. Hinds are almost bringing some of their sunny Spanish weather over to brighten up our English music scene. I am SO excited to head over to Reading fest this year to check out their set but in the meantime don't mind me while I listen to their debut album, Leave Me Alone, a hundred times over... Have a listen below!
