New Pop Revolution
Yes, I stole the name of a Spotify playlist, however I feel it truly represents the sentiment behind this post. As a avid pop lover, I have decided to put together a list of new artists who are really causing a stir in the pop world with their new style crisp riffs and feel good hooks. I found that the pop world is really showcasing fantastic female songwriters and vocalists. The UK charts are filled with the likes of Zara Larsson, Alessia Cara and Dua Lipa, definetely showing the power and popularity of this genre and the new artists within it. Below are some artists which (although definitely not new!) are starting to cause a larger buzz in general and riding the new wave of pop music.
ALLIE X -
I got to work Allie X's music at my previous job. I hadn't heard of the artist before we started working her but I was quickly a fan. I loved her style of songwriting and was excited to see she was working with 'Troye Sivan' co-writing his massive hit 'Youth' for his Blue Neighbourhood album. Safe to say Allie X can write a tune. I also love her look and her signature style of vocal.
DAYA -
Her debut EP self-titled 'Daya' can only be described as a 'Spotify Sensation' with each of the 6 tracks sporting multi millions of streams, with the lead single 'Hide Away' just shy of 200 million streams. This has brought her to the attention of the music world, with her most recently appearing as the featuring artist on The Chainsmokers smash hit 'Don't Let Me Down'. This pairing is almost a little too commercial for my liking but the track itself is catchy and lets Daya showcase her vocals, mostly at the trail end of the track.
ASTRID S -
Finding Astrid S was purely a fluke. I literally cannot remember putting her track 'Hurts So Good' on my Current Commute but one train journey home, it came on shuffle and I was hooked. It's the chorus; Her vocals are showcased to be far more powerful than first teased at the start of the track and the actual melody and overall feel of the track is really addictive. This woman has talent and i'm so happy I found her. Obviously I wasn't the only person who was impressed with her talent. With over 30 million streams and countless others of millions on the tracks from her self titled EP 'Astrid S', Matoma has her as the featured vocalist on their smash hit 'Running Out'. So excited to see what she does next!
HAILEE STEINFELD -
Also known as that actress in Pitch Perfect 2 or the part of Taylor Swift's Bad Blood squad, Hailee has been in the public eye since she stared in 'True Grit' (which also earned her an Oscar Nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 200...), she turned her talents to creating music. Love or hate 'Love Myself' it was a catchy summer song which garnered over 188 million streams on Spotify alone! However, her releases since, including 'Rock Bottom' with DNCE, and her latest release 'Starving' with Grey and Zedd, show her to be a pop force who isn't going anywhere yet. Starving is a really current release and although it is nothing new, it's up their with the best of these kind of releases at the moment and as such, definitely someone I want to keep my eye out on!
DAGNY -
Dagny has the ability to appeal to the masses. Her track 'Backbeat' is so close to breaking the 20 mil mark on Spotify and was a song which seemed to liked by everyone I spoke to about it - Even those who often class themselves 'above' pop music. Republic Records scooped her up and are working on new material as we speak. Her follow up track with BORNS has been popular but i'm excited to see what solo material she'll drop. Definitely an exciting pop act to watch this year.
KSTEWART -
This may be one of the only times I never skipped a YouTube add - New Look chose to include KStewart's track 'Be Without You' as the soundtrack to their entire advert. It also included KStewart and MNEK dancing in New Look clothes (which I didn't care about so much) but the song was instantly catchy and the video grabbed my attention. I found the track on Spotify and streamed and streamed and still like the song till this day. She has fab vocals which I can defiantly imagine will grab the attention of the 'Disclosure' and 'Rudimental' type acts.
