Pale Waves

Introducing Pale Waves;

So I've been looking for a band like this for ages. A band with a sound similar to that of Swim Deep and Peace but with a sassy Haim sounding female vocal instead. I find this 90's retro/hipster vibe is quite difficult to do successfully nowadays so when I came across Pale Waves on YouTube's Sofar Sounds (see below) I was really impressed.

Since then I have been addicted to their song The Tide. The guitar riffs are so chilled and regular which I particularly love as it is as though they are reflecting the calm nature of the sea and its tide. The whole song follows a theme of a carefree young romance. 'We can live for nothing, baby I don't care' - a childish 'yolo' attitude comes to mind. I also really enjoy how the sea and tide are personified to reflect the relationship, 'Lose me like the ocean, feel the motion... I'll be the sea honey always.. and you'll be the tide.' This particular imagery is intriguing as the singer is almost saying that she is constant and will always be there for him (like the reliable sea) but the tide (in this case the male) will go in and out as it pleases suggesting a one way relationship. I found this really interesting and also strengthens the young and naive vibe portrayed.

Pale Waves have also released another song on SoundCloud, Heavenly. This song again follows a young relationship (the female sounding almost lovestruck) but has a more fun and energetic feel to it in comparison to The Tide, 'This night is electric..We can dance forever and pretend, I wanna.. stay till the end'. This shows with only two full songs to date Pale Waves can already change up their sound whilst maintaining their ever beautiful vintage feel.

When I discover bands with such great potential like Pale Waves I get instantly excited to see how they will evolve and develop. I think with the right support and backing behind them this band can really succeed and thrive in their music career. I think they have discovered a niche market to really make their mark on and I am SO excited to see how they go about doing this. Make sure you give The Tide and Heavenly a listen below..
