Ruin;
My silence on this blog has been shocking, For someone who listens to music as much as I do, I honestly feel lazy for not writing on here more. So much new music is coming out (and so much of it that I love) that not to discuss it seems to be nothing but careless. Least to say, that to come back with another post I felt the need to write about something I really felt was special during my silence.
I had been inspired to post my usual content but then I heard this song.
My good friend George texted me one morning and said 'Have you heard the new Shawn Mendes song'. I had not. He's usually not the kind of artist I'd rush to listen too. His songs are catchy but with so many other musicians out there right now, he isn't on the top of my priority list. I listened to 'Ruin' and was immediately overwhelmed as to why George had told me to give it a listen.
It is what we like to call a 'Warm Hug Song'.
Warm Hug Song Definition: A song is which upon listening consumes you in a mighty warmth which only compares to that of a loving hug from someone you love.
Henceforth, this has become my favourite genre of song.
Other songs in the Warm Hug club are 'Conrad' by Ben Howard, 'Magic [Piano Version] by Colbie Calliat and various John Mayer tracks, none more so than 'Love Is A Verb'. This leads nicely into 'Ruin'... The song this post is about.
John Mayer was undoubtably a massive inspiration for this song. You can hear it within the first bar of the guitar chord. You are instantly strung into an atmosphere, feeling the melody starting to move like a wave out of an ocean without Shawn even starting to sing yet. Almost impossibly, there also seems to be some amount of uniqueness to it. There obviously can't be, this is a few chords, which must have been used to other songs at some point. Yet, we are thrust into a mysterious but relaxed vibe, eager to listen on. Once Shawn does sing, we are welcomed by his coaxing vocals. He may only be 17 but I tell you this... This guy can sing. His tone transcends to someone who is wise however , I do think you can here the youth in his voice which does nothing but add to Shawn's personality as a singer.
I have recently gone through a big change in my life. Although it's very exciting, i'm also very anxious. Not so much about what the change is but because of change itself (i've never been good at fitting into one situation and then having to fit into another) but in the loneliness moments, I really found comfort in this song. It may be a simple pop song but I have always believed that simplicity, when done best, is a hard skill in that to do so much with so little is what I aim to achieve in life one way or another.
So, as you might imagine, I would suggest you listen to this song. I doubt it will do as well as his previous international success hit 'Stitches' yet, this song has made it's way into my Warm Hug Club which in my own little universe is a massive achievement.
