Fatherson

Introducing Fatherson;

It was a chilly Wednesday evening as hundreds of bodies crammed their way into London's cosy Borderline. A relatively small venue hosting what can only be described as my best gig of 2016 so far. We arrived mid Boy Jumps Ship set; an exciting up and coming rock band from Newcastle. I have seen these lads a few times, written about them on Forteloud here and have been a dedicated fan since the beginning.

But soon after, the incredible headliner Fatherson took to the stage. This wasn't meant to be a gig post or any sort of performance review. But I must start by describing how incredible a live band these guys really are. Every song of their debut album 'I am an Island' was pitch perfect, vocals sounding as crisp and clear as if I was listening to their album at home on the most high definition sound system I could find. I've never heard anything like it, everything was performed to perfection, their stage presence was unreal and the whole crowd was behind them in a third uniformed vocal.

I'm not just introducing these guys to you, nor am I simply recommending them. I am starting a Fatherson campaign. With the final aim of converting the nation into Fatherson super fans.

I first heard about these guys on the release of their insanely catchy single Always. It cropped up aimlessly on YouTube and I was instantly hooked on their sound. A three piece Scottish ensemble comprising of vocals Ross, bass Marc and drums Greg, based in Glasgow have absolutely stormed onto the Scottish music scene. Formed in 2010 they have since performed at numerous festivals including T in the Park, the Tartan Heart and the Great Escape and have supported huge acts such as Prides, Twin Atlantic and Panic! at the Disco. No one can disagree that these guys have done great things in their career but it is only now they're starting to gain popularity and host their own headline gigs such as the very gig I attended back in February.

With the release of their newest album Open Book they have started to show a new personality to their sound. Whether that's the more pop vibes in Wondrous Heart or the slow minor piano tones in Younger Days, they are sure to suit every genre need. But their roots still remain in tracks such as the chilled Joanna, the single name title compares nicely to James in I Am An Island. With a swap in record labels from 1st to 2nd album, any band is going to have to adjust their sound slightly, but this is not always a disadvantage. They have done this exchange so tastefully the original fans can not help but adore the new sound, newer crowds are attracted by the new varied genre and the music industry are left in awe of these multitalented lads. Everybody's a winner, including those of you who haven't heard anything about them until now.

There isn't one thing not to love about Fatherson. Below are some of my favourite tracks which have left me humming their chorus's long after I've heard them. Be sure to listen to their full albums too, we'd love to know your favourite tracks in the comments!
