Alessia Cara: Here

Here;

My aim is to try and discover one new great song everyday. This is today's discovery. I found Alessia Cara on one of Apple Music's new artist playlists. The beginning of the song really intrigued me. The mysterious beat and voice over meant I had no idea what genre this song was going to be categorized into. When Alessia's vocals were introduced I was strangely addicted to her smooth R&B sound. The song throughout has a smooth jazzy undertone with a steady rhythm kept by the subtle piano in the background. I particularly love how the beat and voice over at the beginning remain a theme throughout. They are sporadically placed behind Alessia's vocals during the song.

As an introvert I found I could really relate to the lyrics. Being in a new, uncomfortable party environment surrounded by unfamiliar faces can sometimes feel quite daunting to me. Just wanting to separate yourself from everyone and hide away is a familiar feeling. Alessia hits the nail on the head when she says 'I would rather be at home all by myself not in this room, With people who don't even care about my well-being'. I'm certain everybody can relate to being in this situation on at least one occasion in their lives. I particularly love how Alessia repeats the word 'Here' almost like she is isolating it from the other lyrics. This reflects on the theme of isolation.

Alessia Cara is a Canadian singer-songwriter originally discovered from her perfect acoustic covers on YouTube. She recently covered Bad Blood by Taylor Swift for Radio 1's Piano Sessions, see below. This cover is pitch perfect throughout and I could not find one fault. I can tell she is an amazing live artist. The years of practicing in front of a camera for YouTube have paid off! I cannot wait to hear Alessia's future singles. I am positive a talent like hers will not go unnoticed.
