In the beginning of winter in 2014, One Direction came back with their fourth album titled FOUR. (Must have taken them ages to figure that name out!) I'm just kidding, I'm not ashamed to say that I love One Direction and have done since I was 13. Although my twitter user name is no longer @EllieMalik1D, I still really do love these guys and continue to support them and the music they put out. Their new album FOUR does not disappoint the fans who have been there since day one, but it also caters for those who previously didn't like the band or never really listened to them before. For example: when I was playing one of the songs to a friend of mine who isn't a fan, and when I told her it was One Direction she was listening to she replied with "Really?! But this is really good!" It was the but that got me. Some people have this awful mindset that they have to hate all One Direction songs because "they're a boyband" (true, but that doesn't effect the quality of their songs) or "they don't write their own songs" (not true) or "all they sing are over produced pop songs" (listen to this album and theres no way that can be said anymore) or "they're gay" (which is just a completely untrue and ridiculous reason not to like something, and anyway, if any members of One Direction were gay, why would that matter anyway?!) Whether you like One Direction or not, don't deny yourself listening to this just because it is a One Direction Album, as it may just surprise you!
The album has many influences including indie rock (particularly Change Your Ticket, it sounds very much like The 1975). There are also country influences (evident in Fireproof) and even irish folk? (listen to Act My Age, you'll know what I mean) and pop rock. The album is diverse and there is just the right amount of each type of song. Im pretty sure that everyone will like at least one song on this album. Ready To Run and No Control are regular pop songs we hear from the boys, but matured. Its as if someone took songs from their first album Up All Night and took out the bubblegum and put in a bit more creative freedom and age. As the boys are growing older, their fans are growing older too, and I feel that this album really suits people like me, who have been along with the ride since the very beginning.
The album also provides those produced and manufactured to perfection bubblegum pop songs that made them famous for the younger fans listening to the album (Where Do Broken Hearts Go, Steal My Girl) But what would a One Direction album be without the soppy love songs that we all love so much, particularly imagining the boys singing them just to you. (We've all done it, don't deny it). Night Changes, Fools Gold and Eighteen (which was written by Ed Sheeran) are all lovely songs that just make you smile when you listen to them. There were a few songs on the album that are almost unrecognisable to their previous sound. When I heard them I thought "What? This is One Direction?" The songs that made me feel like this were Clouds and Act My Age, but don't get me wrong its definitely not a negative thing. I absolutely love that the guys are changing up their sound, and these are among my favourite songs on the album. I'm so happy that the boys have been granted a lot more creative freedom with this album, and the songs they have written are truly wonderful. Yes, they did have some help writing some songs but that doesn't deny them of their talent and right to write great pop songs.
A song that really plucked my heartstrings is Fireproof. Honestly, when it came out as a free download I listened to it I don't even know how many times that day. It was just everything I wanted to hear and it was just so adorable and addictive. Thats the thing with One Direction, they're infectiously catchy and addictive. Please give this album a chance guys. Although it wont be winning Grammys it is ultimately charming, and will pick you up on a bad day as a light listen. I'll guarantee you'll be smiling by song 5. Whether you like them or not, One Direction are one of the most powerful music artists of our time, and their extraordinarily large fan base aren't backing down anytime soon.
