Chromatone: Play For Me

Play For Me;

I found this track instantly extremely interesting... It seems to be a mix of various different genres with Chromatone creating a masterpiece of fusion with rock, jazz and dance all playing vitals parts in the outcome of this track.

At the beginning there is a sorta rock 'James Bond' sound with this spy-like feel being created through the static, pointed rhythm amongst the riffs, the falling and rising harmony in the bassline, the strong punched beats and the ticking drum beat which comes in last and then holds them altogether. I loved the atmospheric "ah" vocal melody and the way it hits the track harmonically at the start. It's quite mysterious and slightly minor but extremely satisfying to the ear. I think this feeling eludes to the lyrics in the chorus "Play for me, and say, you're longing to be back again, somehow," which suggest the singer wants someone to come back to him despite them not seeming to want to, with him asking them to "say" without them already saying it.

We fall into the first verse. I instantly loved the tone of his voice and enjoyed the way it played rhythmically with the jazz-like beat in the bassline. In the chorus, this Jazz influence is furthered with the trumpet acting as a call and response to the electric guitar, with the two instruments playing within each other just as Chromatone does with the genres he is fusing.

I found the ending extremely interesting too.. There is just so much going on but he does it so subtly because you can listen to the song without feeling overwhelmed with all the different techniques he incorporates but if you look deeper, you can see their has definitely been more thought into this track than any ordinary song in the charts.
