Rae performed on the introducing stage at Reading festival this year... What made me interested in her was her voice: it's very pure and clean but still meaningful, slightly mysterious in my opinion. So when I first heard the track performed on the stage and then listened to the one on her channel, I cannot say I was surprised to hear something a bit different to what I was expecting.
Cold starts with both vocalists, more so Fryars than hers, echoed, so they are ever so slightly distorted. It adds perfectly to the electric sound of the track, making it seem all the colder and more distant. Yet her voice, as I described before, cuts through the whole soundtrack, hitting each note so so we aren't lost in an electric trance but just in the words of the song. More so, the track itself isn't extremely cold or, in a sense, something which is too negative or uncomfortable to listen too. I like the little light injections which glisten on the track in the higher timbre. I am also for a sucker for a piano over a drone... I think it's supposed to make me feel uneasy but instead, it holds me within the track like a hug. Lastly, I like the beat that comes in after the first chorus. I think it's very current and will make people follow the track and yet, it isn't so identical that Rae Morris is like everything else in the charts: I think she is different and interesting and I am going to keep my eye on her... (In a non-creepy way.)
