Colbie Caillat: Try

Try;

After literally watching this video a minute ago, I knew I had to come onto the blog and post about it... I have been a fan of Colbie Caillat for years so I don't know how I hadn't come across the song until now (almost a month late!) but oh.my.god I was almost reduced to tears...

There has been a surge across all social media platforms recently (or at least, defiantly in the UK) about women's rights and our places in society. I am glad that the term 'feminism' is finally being understood for it's true definition and more and more people are getting involved in the injustice that surrounds the subject.

Since I was a little girl, I have always rejoiced my gender and for so long, didn't understand how anyone could doubt us on any of our actions and growing up, I was lucky to face little prejudice due to the nature of the UK law and attitudes towards women and yet, more recently, perhaps as I am now less naive, I have come to realise that despite laws being changed and societies evolving, us women are still condemned to face some scrutiny; we defeat one demon and another rises to take it's place.

Recently I had a guy say to me 'I don't know why you wear that make-up... No one notices.' and I kind of just stared at him in disbelief... Not due to the fact that a guy hadn't noticed I had put makeup on but due to the fact someone thought I had put makeup on to please someone else. I do not use makeup to hide my imperfections but I wear it almost as another accessory to my outfit... I like matching my lipstick and nail polish with my outfit because I like shopping and I like colour coordination (not saying that all girls should/do but I just do!)... I should have asked that guy why he was wearing a fleece since it sure wasn't cold enough outside to wear it and seen how he would have replied... Probably in a similar fashion to me!

Although different countries around the world struggle with woman's rights in their own forms (and it shocks me at the lengths some women have to go to get what I take for granted), when I heard Colbie Calliat's Try I almost sighed relief to the fact that one of my pet hates was finally addressed in main stream media. I hate the idea that women are a gender who are to cater for the other... WE AREN'T. Yes, we wear makeup and yes, we do it to dress up but ask yourself, who are you really trying to impress? If it's others or yourself, then you need to reconsider why you are putting the makeup on in the first place. Try is highlighting this in one. I don't think Colbie is having a go at girls who chose to wear products but instead, asking them why they are wearing it... Our lives don't have to be constant battles where we have to fight to find our happiness. They don't have to be contests with other girls and they most certainty do not need to be quests to make someone notice you. I think Colbie is telling women that you don't have to try to find yourself because you is already here! It is behind those eyes that are reading this right now and it's that face that looks you in the mirror when you first get up in the morning... You are enough, with or without makeup or anything else that you may try.
I know this post is not very musical but, this song has opened this discussion. I am proud of Colbie's video and so happy that people are spreading it and that it has received such a response. For me, I realised long ago I didn't have to try to be anything but myself and to live my life in accordance to what I want to be truly happy and I hope that others will realise it for themselves.
