'Promenade' by Lyonn

Promenade - EP
by Lyonn
Release Date: 15th May 2014

I was asked to review this EP by Lyonn himself when he contacted me through twitter, and as I love listening to new music, I instantly agreed, and started listening to the four track EP Promenade. I did some research on him to find out more about him and I found out that he's been playing in alternative bands for years, so he's not new to the music industry. He's taken a break from bands to travel and focus on songwriting. It was here that he was inspired to create a new music project under the name of Lyonn (his real name is Tyler Gelrud). I don't like comparing artists as every artist is an individual, but when I first listened to Promenade, I thought Lyonn's voice sounded a lot like Ed Sheeran, which is a really good thing. I've been revising for my GCSE exams this week and I've had Promenade on repeat in the background, and then in the shower, and then on the way to and from school, and then when I'm going to sleep... I've become completely addicted to it. It's sound is so relaxing, but not boring. When I listen to music I try to think if it will translate well live, as some songs just don't but Lyonn's songs do not disappoint, and I would love to see him live if he ever comes to London sometime. Although Promenade's overall sound is quite relaxing and quiet, it does have some songs which are a tad faster and more belty. The songs have catchy melodies which are easy to familiarise with (I found myself singing "You're a dancing machineeeeeeee, my dancing queeeeeeeen." For hours after I first heard the song) I particularly thought 'Dancing Queen' is a strong  song on the EP, and I can definitely hear it on the radio and in the charts. But the track that really stands out for me is 'Sing You to Sleep'. It sounds so haunting and beautiful. The lyrics are so wonderful and sweet, my favourite being right at the end "But for now while we're here and we're young, and you're wrapped in my arms baby sleep." The song makes you feel all lovely and warm. What I love about this song is how it slowly and gradually builds up to the end. The instrumentation is brilliant and it all works perfectly together. I'm so glad Lyonn asked me to review Promenade, because now I have a new favourite artist to listen to. Watch this space, I think he's going to do great.
