I was instantly intrigued... The alternating, pulsing electric notes at the start, repeating over and over, put you into a trance, forcing you to keep listening (but because it's Coldplay, you are gonna listen anyway!) I think it has a very warm sound; although you don't know what is happening, you just know it's going to end well or take you somewhere you will like. I love how it grows... Everything is gradually building and building toward something. The voice at the start is quite plain, with the electronic harmony making it slightly deeper, but it's kind of a whole sound... A wholeness. Then we get some very simple little higher electronic melodies and some bassy chords acting as a drone, which all encourage a 'floating' atmosphere, letting the sound be light and again, very warm. It's this contrast of high and low which create this whole vacuum.. It's open but it's not empty. The track really does feel like 'Midnight' because i've never seen the nighttime or the dark as a scary thing... I've always just found it mysterious and I definitely think this is the sound Coldplay emit with this track. I think Coldplay is trying to play on the dance craze which is dominating the UK charts these days, however their interpretation is very interesting in the fact it isn't a dance track, perhaps more techno or electronic yet it hints towards a 'drop' or when the track falls into an heavy bass-driven beat, which is classic in any chart dominating track of today. It builds and builds, and then it fades out, letting listeners realise what they heard was the drop or one which isn't like all the others we are so used to hearing. I'm not sure how Coldplay fans will react to this... Usually their songs are popular due to their rememberable melodies, yet Midnight doesn't focus on that aspect but it seems to be more focused on the atmosphere it creates... However, I like this song and despite not really knowing why, i'm one happy Coldplay fan. :)
