Lorde: Glory and Gore

Glory and Gore;

You think of Lorde and you think Royals... Right? Yes it's a great track but have you listened to anything else from her album 'Pure Heroine'? If not, Glory and Gore is (I think!) a great example of what Lorde is great at. It has a dark and deep beat, with the melody following through the rhythm of the beat rather than the other way round. When I listened to Pure Heroine, it is clear the beat is important to her sound so I found the use of it in Glory and Gore quite interesting. I liked from 2:10 onwards a pitched beat is played and it sounds so distant from the rest of the track, yet as Lorde starts singing again, it remains prominent but not as distant so is successful at building the song in a way the listeners accept but also find strange. I also love how the beat changes, getting closer together after the chorus and growing and we fall with it in anticipation, waiting for the next section to start. Apart from the beat, another distinctive quality of Lorde is her vocals; they remain in the lower register for a female singer however, are extremely effective at portraying the emotion in the words. Most of Lorde's  tracks are not typical pretty 'pop-princess' tracks; Glory and Gore explores the similarities between these two (supposed) opposing topics. I like that Lorde  is a bit edgy and invites listeners to consider things perhaps not previously discussed as much in the popular charts these days.
