Garden + Emperor;
My love of Spotify has already been established quite obviously in previous posts, but just for clarification - it's fab, and has once again introduced me (and now you) to an awesome new artist - Wilsen.
The first thing that stood out for me with Wilsen is the vocals. They're beautifully delicate without being weak and have this lush tone to them. What drew me in was the fact that the chorus of Emperor reminds me so much of Daughter, a mix of their old and new work and the similarity in voices. Emperor is a simple track, which is what makes it so lush. Wilsen is solely accompanied by guitar that doubles the vocal rhythm and plays an arpeggiated movement behind the guitar melody, with this slight reverb to create a beautiful atmosphere around her voice. The simplicity makes it elegant and compelling. And the fusion of the two elements are haunting, as they emphasise her voice as she sings: “Would. You. Face? / Face it now. That’s all we wish. / Would. You. Face? / Don’t weep for those years gone.”
Garden is more upbeat and is orchestrated with a slightly larger group of instruments with the addition of percussion and vocal samples, to her initial vocals and guitar accompaniment. The accompanying instrumental parts of the track are really captivating, all of the parts are very staccato and delicate, agile as they flow through the track. The lyrics are much heavier than the instrumentation itself, "down on the isles / we only took what was easy / couldn't carry the weight of the world / on our backs // we'll make the path to get to the garden / watching the weight of the world pass by". The accompaniment drifts through the track with ease, as though they have already made the path to the garden that Wilsen is searching for and are just waiting for her to arrive.
If you haven’t already heard of Wilsen I seriously recommend giving her a listen, especially if you like artists such as Daughter. Below are her top listened tracks on Spotify, including both Garden and Emperor, so have a listen to see what you think!
