Sam Hunt;
To see Sam Hunt on the Radio 2 playlist really surprised me. I am so happy to see that the UK is embracing more country music with the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood, Hunter Hayes and Brit talents Ward Thomas and The Shires making their way onto the airwaves of the UK's most popular radio station. Yet, Sam Hunt is different to these other artists. His incorporation of hip-hop/rap into his country sets him out as something really interesting as well as not to everyone's tastes.
Tracks like 'Take Your Time' see this in the first verse. He leads us into the track with his voice and it's something that even I found difficult to take seriously. Yet I couldn't help but listen. He was so intriguing and once we were taken into the chorus, I was given that typical country hook. It was good enough to keep my listening to his album so even though I was a bit apprehensive, I kept on.
By the second track, Hunt gives country fans their anthems with tracks such as 'House Party' and 'Leave the Night On'. My country feels were given their typical graspers and I instantly added them into my current playlist in spotify because I had to listen to them again and again. Something that stood out to me after these typical country/pop songs was that I didn't feel lame for listening to them. I think it's really difficult for male country artists to create country/pop crossover tracks that are considered credible. I am a massive Hunter Hayes fan but I know even he has struggled with it. I think the hip hop elements of his style give his music a bit of edge that makes it cooler. It makes him stand out but also make his music something you want to blast out. By the time I listened to 'Break Up In A Small Town', I was used to his talking/rapping technique and I had embraced it. Now, that is one of my favourite songs on the album and I genuinely really love it's feel and lyrics.
If you listen to his music you may understand why I can see why the typical Radio 2 listener might not understand Sam Hunt and his sound but I think his crossover is important on all levels. I am a firm believer in diversity and it's these kind of mixes which keeps emerging music interesting. Even me, a massive country fan, likes to see these kind of artists creating within the genre, broadening it's sound so even more people can get involved and appreciate it's message.
