One;
On a hunt for some new music, I usually head to Spotify and check out the 'related artists' tab on artists I already admire. I think I was in the midst of Port Isla when this name sorta stuck out... Big Sixes... I was pretty sure I had heard it before. Regardless, I felt the need to click upon their picture and play the first track I found, adeptly named 'One'.
Now, I don't want to sound like i'm moaning, but I feel as if the current music market is slightly lacking in real musical composers. Where have all those alternative/indie artists gone that were cool to like back in 2011, creating songs out of that strophic structure, having verses where choruses should be or not even having versus or choruses at all but instead, creating tracks which completely emulated the emotions described. Don't get me wrong, i'm a such a sucka for a great pop track, and I a great chart as much as the next young youth of this generation.
Yet, when I first listened to One I almost sighed with relief. Finally. I found something which took me back to 2011. A quirky little track which isn't what it says on the box. It is more than just a catchy hook or a beat. It's difference is what attracts you to listen to it again. Not once or twice or even three times... This short but sweet little track has been on repeat in a loop on my computer. Something about it is compelling and strangely addictive.
Is it that the harmonies are thick and secured or that their place above the sliding minor under tone makes you feel slightly unsettled? However, Big Sixes are clever, using sweet melodies in the voices and piano line, warming the listeners against this slightly un-covential use of tone and pitch. So although this takes me back to 2011, it is still very much new every time you listen to it.
