'5 Seconds of Summer' by 5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer
by 5 seconds of Summer
UK Release Date - 27th June 2014

I was a huge fan of 5 Seconds of Summer for a very long time, and after waiting almost two years, I finally have an album. Although the boys have released many EPs before, this is their first full length album. The album is the absolute definition of punk pop, almost every song either makes you want to dance around like crazy and/or sing your heart out. I had already heard some of the songs prior to release when they had been performed live by the boys at some of the 9 5sos shows I had been to, and although the live versions are in my opinion better, the studio versions are good and translate well onto the album. The album has a healthy mix of pop, punk rock and some slower songs giving the listener absolutely everything they want to hear. There really is something for everybody on this album, which probably explains its worldwide success.

It debuted at #1 in 13 countries including the US and of course its homeland of Australia. It was in the top 10 of many other countries. It has been certified Gold in Australia, Spain and the UK. For a band that was unheard of prior to this album's release, it's an incredible achievement for 5 Seconds Of Summer to have been so successful in such a short amount of time. But 5 Seconds Of Summer was not always the four guys we know today.

All the way back in 2007 when member Luke Hemmings made his youtube channel 'hemmo1996' which has since been changed to 5 Seconds Of Summer, and started posting covers on youtube solo with his guitar. He was then joined by fellow schoolmates Michael Clifford & Calum Hood. They carried on posting covers, developing a small following. The full lineup was completed when Ashton Irwin joined the band in 2011 thus 5 Seconds Of Summer was formed. The band continued uploading videos and played shows in Australia, including supporting Hot Chelle Rae on their Australian tour. Although the boys had an Australian following, their international success came when they caught the attention of One Direction. 5sos supported One Direction on their Take Me Home tour and Where We Are tour, giving them an instant, worldwide fan base.

The band worked on the album throughout late 2012, all of 2013 and early 2014. They've written with many artists including McFly, Scouting For Girls, Nick Hodgson (Kaiser Chiefs), Alex Gaskarth (All Time Low) and James Bourne (Busted).

The standard edition of the album features 12 songs:
1. She Looks So Perfect
2. Don't Stop
3. Good Girls
4. Kiss Me Kiss Me
5. 18
6. Everything I Didn't Say
7. Beside You
8. End Up Here
9. Long Way Home
10. Heartbreak Girl
11. English Love Affair
12. Amnesia
The deluxe includes an extra 3 songs:
13. Social Casualty
14. Never Be
15. Voodoo Doll
The fans back in Aus & NZ recieved "Lost Boy" exclusive to them instead of "English Love Affair"
American fans recieved "Mrs All American" instead of "English Love Affair"
Those who bought the album on iTunes received "Greenlight" which could not be bought anywhere else.
Those who bought the album at Target received 4 extra tracks exclusive to Target:
13. Tomorrow Never Dies
14. Independence Day
15. Close As Strangers
16. Out Of My Limit
Across the globe this gives the album a whopping track list of 22 songs all of which fit well onto the album. I even think that some of the deluxe songs are better than the standard ones but whatever, I didn't choose the track list!

Although I do really like the album, upon first listening I did feel a slight element of disappointment  Fans did get a taste of what was to come before the album was released through live performances and B-sides on their EPS, and these were very promising. Songs such as "Heartache On The Big Screen" and "Rejects" were incredible! They really got everyone excited as these seemed to be foreshadowing good things to come but I feel like these songs should have been on the album instead of a few songs I felt were a bit weak. But nonetheless, I still enjoyed the album, it didn't leave me feeling completely disappointed.

I know I'm super late in posting this literally over 6 months since its release (oops) but it's one of those albums you can have on in the background or whilst doing literally anything. It has a fun, summery vibe that can accompany any garden parties or summer barbecues you guys have this summer. (Not in January...) Its perfect for having on whilst doing homework, cleaning, showering, exercising,  running etc. It's one of those albums you can enjoy without really having to listen to it. That probably doesn't make sense but theres no other way I can describe it.

4 songs have been released from the album as singles. She Looks So Perfect, Don't Stop, Amnesia & Good Girls. She Looks So Perfect received huge worldwide success. Although it didn't make them superstars, it changed them from being "5 Seconds Of Summer? No, I've never heard of them" into "Oh 5 Seconds Of Summer, I've heard of them, I like that She Looks So Perfect song" You see what I mean? Their other singles achieved mediocre success, but nonetheless kept the interest up and fans happy. I really think they've got a promising future and although I'm not a fan of theirs anymore, I really do wish them all the best and I'm sure they'll have a great future because if there's anything that I know about them it's that they've worked incredibly hard to be where they're at.

Favourite tracks: Good Girls, 18, Everything I Didn't Say, Long Way Home, Amnesia, Voodoo Doll, Independence Day
