There was just something about her name 'Violet Skies' which drew me to listening to her... It seemed kinda mysterious and hinted at an alternative sound (which i'm loving right now) and her name kept creeping up during the summer so I thought i'd give her set at Glastonbury a listen and was not disappointed!
Patience immediately held me... I'm a sucker for songs that just sound beautiful and the introduction of this song does just that... It's careful and scalic piano melody moves within a sort of drone, creating an almost ambiguous feeling (I neither know whether to feel happy or sad but i'm sorta just in the middle!) and I love the use of echo on her vocals, growing and then falling into the first verse... It creates just enough excitement to lead us into the song whilst retaining it's air of intrigue.
I like the use of a beat in the first verse... It is a very popular sound at the moment and gives the listeners something familiar to follow and grab onto to. Her voice and melody work well with this beat, keeping listeners held and moving onward as Violet Skies does.
I have to say my favourite part of the track is the violin solo, adding an even mellower sound to that already created. I like the way it moves through the beat and cuts through with it's sound and I don't know how to describe it other than beautiful (as a fan of film-music, I love the use of classical instruments within popular songs!) but it definately helps define this track as something a bit different to what is already out there.
I would compare her to someone such as BANKS just due to the sound of the track and it way it is structured...I love the way it grows, mostly using her voice and the build up of melodies and textures in the climax until the very end, where all the instruments are stripped back so they play very lightly... The viola is plucked so that warmth is still there but it's lighter than before. I like the chanting element that finishes that song... It brings the voices together and holds the listener until it stops, keeping us as interested as we were at the start because we don't know where it's going...
Overall, I think this song is exploring different routes than just the typical pop structure and I like the classical and alternative features however, there is enough familiarity for most people to find an element they enjoy, showing Violet Skies to be a very interesting artist indeed!
I really like Patience and am looking forward to seeing what she does next!
