Wolf Alice: Moaning Lisa Smile

Moaning Lisa Smile;

I have to say the name, the name Wolf Alice first caught my attention at the end of last year... I had studied a book called 'The Bloody Chamber' as part of my English Literature course and there was one story which involved a girl called 'Wolf Alice'. I don't know if the artist is named after the character in this story, yet I was immediately interested in her sound, purely from just the name. The character in the mini-story was one of my favourites in the collective 'Bloody Chamber' works and hinted towards something a little dark with good intentions. There was some buzz around her and I bought her 'single of the week' track on iTunes and yet, I kind of forgot about her since. Then the other day, I was hunting for some new music and came across 'Moaning Lisa Smile'; a name which, once again, caught my attention. I liked the play on words; why was Mona Lisa now moaning? I gave the video and track a watch and listen and immediately fell in love with it. Just as I thought, Wolf Alice produced a track which felt good but had a underlining darkness; the rock influence gives it this edge whilst the catchy chorus and guitar riffs grab the listener and enters them into this security. The "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ahh" sections are proper throw your hands in the air sections and I just love the pace of this song: once the drums and guitar start to play, they refuse to relent until the end of the song.

The video is also very interesting; it has a Dallas Buyers Club sorta feel because the video features men dressing up as a woman, hinting perhaps the Moaning aspect the name suggests: the girl in the video is judged by the other girls and we would assume, due to the reactions of the judges in the dance competition, the men are judged in a similar way. However, I like the idea of the Smile because all oppressed end up dancing and enjoying themselves, regardless of the reactions. Overall, the sound and video are current, exciting and powerful and I will definitely not forget about Wolf Alice again! I am looking forward to what she produces next!
