BANKS: Waiting Game

Waiting Game;

I love the cold growing and falling vocals at the start of the track: we are immediately introduced to the idea that BANKS is a little mysterious and different. Then we hear her vocals, which at first remain quite low and almost break against the melody, exaggerating the coolness in the initial vocals at the start. I loved the piano notes and chords which followed, and there is some dissonance and harsh tonality and we are certified that this track, is slightly dark (which the video, which is in black and white, suggests). Finally BANKS's vocals break into their higher register and for a moment, we feel safe and the melody is soft in the way it moves. However, when the beat drops in, and it's heavy, you feel yourself accepting the track for it's darkness and I think listeners can relate to that heavy sound because it is more and more finding it's way into our popular charts i.e. like Lorde's 'Royals'. Yet BANKS doesn't follow typical popular conventions; the harmony and her voice is sometimes a bit distorted and I like the rhythm in the line 'You used to wrap me up and tell me that you think this was smart' because it just about fits but you feel the drag in her voice as it comes to the end of the beat in the bar. I think BANKS'  sound in Waiting Game is exactly what is popular in the British charts at the moment. It's new, it's harsh but it's got a beat which grabs and pulls you along. I can see BANKS doing very well in 2014!
