Gabrielle Aplin: Salvation & Start of Time

Salvation;

Gabrielle caught my attention in her cover of 'Power of Love' in the 2012's John Lewis Christmas advert... Ever since then, I've been a fan of her wonderful music and vocals. Salvation hasn't been a single from her debut album English Rain but the song features in the advert for the new 'Diana' movie staring Naomi Watts coming out later this year. The constant driving rhythm in the broken chords in the piano makes the listeners anticipate something coming and we move with the track as it grows. The lyrics and melody are powerful and, as always, Aplin's voice is so lovely to listen too. I love it how the track builds and builds with the introduction of the strings and then the drums with a final vocal belt from Aplin resulting in a strong instrumental break for the climax, which filters back to a soft outro, focusing back to on Gabrielle's pure vocals. It's one of my favourite tracks from the album; gives me goosebumps when I listen to it!

Start of Time;

Start of Time is the last track on English Rain and so, a reason perhaps why it's not as well known. However, as soon as I heard Stant in Time when I listened to the album for the first time, I was immediately blown away by the coaxing melody and vocals. It's similar to Salvation in how it grows in orchestration for the climax but fizzles out as a perfect finishing track to the album. I think Stant in Time, for it's lyrics, melody and overall feel, might be my favourite on the album. It's rare I find a track that makes such an impression on me so quickly... The track is just so light and warm; "It's like the sun came out." For me, that's a sign that song is more than it first seems and so, I encourage you to find an audio of this somewhere and give it a listen. It's beautiful.
