Sam McCarthy: Don't Let Me Go

Don't Let Me Go;

I can't tell you how much I love this song by Sam McCarthy... I found out about it through my sister who told me not to judge it because of the singer (Harry Styles from One Direction, if you're curious). Sam McCarthy has apparently said Styles wrote the majority of the lyrics and the song itself and I must say, I was impressed. It sounds like a typical pop song, yet the 6/8 time signature gives it a dancy-waltzy feel, so the lyrics flow gently with the melody and you find yourself singing the chorus as loud as you can, 'Don't let me go!'. There are also some jazzy chords, the most obvious just before the chorus, which exaggerates the desperation of not wanting to be alone and searching for the one you miss (the message in the song) whilst also, showing how both artists wanted to create a deeper message to their song, rather than just a simple pop-love anthem. I love the choice of instrumentation; it's all very light so the focus is on the vocals, but I like the piano and drum at the start. It's simple but effective. The vocals follow the words accurately and are very easy to listen too; it's a kind of husky but warm tone. I really love this song.. Good one McCarthy and Styles!
