Momo's:

Momo's comes from a beautiful full band album, titled Jassbusters, which was released in October of this year. It's an enchanting album, that builds up an atmosphere that unsettles through uncomfortable lyrics of a tale of a student-teacher relationship, but one which draws you in through the guitar tones and deep grooves. It's a concept album, which has been released with a film and works very well in focusing on the mood and atmosphere.
Momo's was co-written between James Blake and Mockasin. It also features Blakes easily distinguishable vocals, that take lead as they float alongside Mockasin's fragile falsetto. It's a beautiful track that moves along like fog, lifting an ethereal mood. Momo's is an intense track that continues to fit into Mockasin's unique style, lifting simple riffs and grooves, drawing you along.

Alles nix konkretes
by AnnenMayKantereit
Release date: March 18th 2016

Tracklist: Oft gefragt / Pocahontas / Es geht mir gut / 3. Stock / Wohin du gehst / Mir wär lieber, du weinst / Bitte bleib / Neues Zimmer / Barfuß am Klavier / 21, 22, 23 / Länger bleiben / Das Krokodil //

AnnenMayKantereit were a brilliant find while I was on my year abroad in Berlin. I was originally planning on writing about their previous release Wird schon irgendwie gehen but I'm so glad I waited for their album release. Alles nix konkretes is a mix of the EP tracks and new tracks that we haven't heard yet.
I've had a lot of people say to me that because they don't speak German they can't connect with the music in the way that they would if it was in their mother tongue, which is understandable. However, their music isn't just their lyrics and although lyrics are important, the music accompanying the vocals is just as important. They have lush solos and bridges within their tracks that take their music to another level, have a listen to Bitte bleib and you'll see what I mean. If a language difference has been holding you back, gives these guys a chance. I recently undertook a project for the final year of my degree and part of the research was how individuals connect with music – understanding the music was a major factor in this. Half of the individuals that I interviewed could still connect to music even if it was in a foreign tongue – I think that you can still connect to music that’s in another language, as you can feel emotion even if you can’t understand their words.
Their sound is compiled up of guitar, piano, drums and bass. The piano fills up a lot of the sparser moments; walking bass lines leading the rest of the band in, in songs such as Es geht mir gut; whilst their lead singer’s voice, recognisable for it’s rough tone, directs you through their stories of their first loves and relationships, and their apartments, their stories of smoking and drinking (which, if they were to be sung in English, wouldn’t sound anywhere near as good).
Barfuß am Klavier is an example of the versatility of the album. Just vocal accompanied by piano, which is fitting really with the title of 'Barefoot at the Piano', it gives you this raw acoustic version of their sound - transporting you to their world and to a completely different environment that the rest of the album gives but it still fits so perfectly among the rest of the tracklist.
Alles nix konkretes is an easy listening album; with catchy choruses and riffs it’s one that’s easy to get attached to.

Bury Me At Makeout Creek
by Mitski
Release Date: 11th November 2014

Tracklist: Texas Reznikoff / Townie / First Love/Late Spring / Francis Forever / I Don't Smoke / Jobless Monday / Drunk Walk Home / I Will / Carry Me Out / Last Words of a Shooting Star //

I've been listening to this album for months, pretty much on repeat whilst switching between this, Nick Drake's Bryter Layter, Julia Jacklin's Don't Let The Kids Win and HAIM's Days Are Gone. I felt it was definitely time to write about it. The album's been out for a few years now, and since this album, Mitski's had a newer release - Puberty 2. However, this album is still currently all I want to listen to.
Bury Me At Makeout Creek is delicate before she drowns the listener with sound keeping them afloat with her vocals. There's an amass of sound, whilst her distorted dirty guitar tones and feedback float through the album leading the listener through her stories of content first loves who wear socks in bed, which leads to the contrasting startling images in Townie, of a love that 'falls as fast as a body from the balcony / I want a kiss like my heart is hitting the ground'. The album’s full of love, identity, belonging and desire. Whilst she’s searching for the right relationship, she’s doing it on her terms where her body, even if fractured, is hers and only hers: ‘I’m not gonna be what my Daddy wants me to be / I’m wanna be what my body wants me to be’.
The album consistently moves from delicate, and content, to shattering distortion, both musically and emotionality. Whilst Mitski moves from content love to feeling trapped in a relationship: ‘please, hurry leave me / I can’t breathe / Please don’t say you love me’. Bury Me At Makeout Creek is full of power. The sort of power you find in individuals who push themselves to keep going even when it’s mentally impossible. It’s an album full of love and desire, yes, but it demonstrates female empowerment in all kinds of forms: needing to be loved, wanting to be loved, being strong and empowered in yourself and your body, finding yourself without the need of someone else or with the need of someone else, having the strength to be yourself, having the ability to demonstrate that ‘I am stronger than you give me credit for’.
Not only do the lyrics demonstrate this but also the instrumentation. The music is full of drive and power. Through her distorted guitar tones, a sound that is quite often claimed through the male sounds of rock music and male guitarists, and she utilises these sounds so well, with a drive and a musical violence that’s balance out by her vocals keeping everything afloat amongst the distortion and feedback.
The raw energy that’s displayed in this album and the power and confidence that Mitski displays in Bury Me At Makeout Creek creates an unbelievable album. Do listen below if you haven’t had the change to already:
